In our youth-obsessed culture, we often neglect to realize the many benefits of turning fifty. Instead we lament that we’re no longer considered young anymore and feeling our best days are behind us.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
A friend of my family happily declared on his 60th birthday that “Sixty is the new thirty.”
Life after fifty is far from over. For many it’s a new beginning—a rebirth.
For starters here are some of the many benefits:
- In our youth, we tend to be opinionated and quite strong in our beliefs. By fifty, most of us have mellowed out and become more tolerant of others holding different points of view. We realize the world would be a very boring place if all of us thought the same.
- When we were younger, we were always in a rush and impatient for things to happen. Now that we are older and wiser, we realize life is going its natural course and the best thing we can do is let that happen and, as they say, “Go with the flow.”
- Younger people tend to be socially awkward, second-guessing how they’re supposed to act and respond in challenging situations. By fifty, we possess more confidence and don’t bother focusing on saying and doing the right thing all the time.
- Like many of us, when I was younger, I always worried if people liked and accepted me. Now, if they don’t take a liking to me, I know I don’t need them—in fact, I’m better off without them. I am much more comfortable in my own skin and don’t have to be liked by everybody.
In addition, with the numerous advances in health care and the wealth of information on diet and staying fit, people over fifty can expect to live longer and be active for years to come.
So turning fifty doesn’t mean you’re over the hill; on the contrary, it’s the opportunity for second chances while feeling more confident, having attained wisdom from life experiences. You are more cognizant of life’s realities, you’ve learned to be more patient and tolerant, and you’re not worried that everyone must love you.
But keep in mind you need to be diligent about diet and fitness.
